Just about there...

We went back to the house today while it was daylight...and saw the finishing touches being applied! They are about 80% done! Should be alllll done painting by noon on Thursday! Glen (our contractor) popped in today and textured the walls in the bathroom. He's coming back to paint those tomorrow morning. Overall, we're in good shape! Here's a few more photos!

Our head painter Ricardo putting the second coat on the kitchen cupboards. Paint ended up definitely being lighter than I thought (sometimes hard to tell from those 3 inch samples). Overall I really like it though. Really brightens up the kitchen nicely. The flash sort of blows out the actual color here...but it IS different than the walls. The living room and up to the 2nd floor (and the doors...they look SOOO much better...they were several colors to begin with. LOL)
At the top of the stairs. Looking down to the bedrooms and bathrooms. The cupboards on the right are storage - they look much better clean and painted too!
Looking down on the living room and dining room.
Our room looking out over into the spare room.
This one is blurry, but I thought it showed a good look of the living room. Those walls were dark red and dark green before.
Standing in the kitchen looking into the family room. Cupboards used to be dark brown and family room was a light brownish before.
Overall, it's a big change, and definitely a clean look - what a great start! :)
Looking forward to getting partially moved in this weekend!!

Bathrooms...

Okay, before we get to the renos, I have to show off this cute pic of my baby...he's SO into posing for photos lately. Every photo I take he's cranning to be in! The bathrooms are kind of at a standstill this week. We had to get the painting done, but we didn't want/expect our contractor to work in the paint fumes...plus it would be hard to work around the painters. Work is due to resume on Thursday. Overall, they are looking great. Walls have been mudded and are ready for painting (there will be some color on these walls!). Then it's just the floor - which is ready and waiting in the garage and the final addition of the toilet/vanities/mirrors/lights. Early next week I think!
This bathroom is our final project. I think we may actually be living in the house before it's complete. Obviously it needed painted ;), but originally Steve and I thought we'd leave it as is. Once we really looked at it though...well, it's getting redone too!
We've started packing at the *old* house, and we're planning to start moving stuff over this weekend. The next week will be the big stuff, and then the final move in!!
If you're reading my blog b/c you're a bay area friend...and you're available either this weekend or next....we'd LOOOOVE some help with lifting. My hand is still too out of sorts to lift stuff (plus I'm a total weakling!), and Steve can't do it all on his own...any help is appreciated! :) I am especially helpful to several of my girlfriends who have offered to entertain Carter during the move. It's such a relief, and I know he'll have more fun playing with friends that being underfoot. Thanks ladies!! xxx

LOTSA Pics!!

Steve and I worked our butts off last weekend to get the house into final shape before the painters arrived early Monday morning. Steve was a true champion and spent most of the weekend on a ladder 20 feet up scraping off the ugly wallpaper border that went around the entire house...yes, even on a slanted vaulted ceiling. WEIRD. Of course, we soon discovered that the border was a big improvement to the hideous coral colored walls underneath ;)

I spent the weekend cleaning up the floors and doing final work on the cupboards...and a lot of vacuming. Where the dog hair keeps coming from I'll never know...

Carter was even very good. Poor kid spent the entire day Sunday following us around an empty house with no toys and nothing to keep him busy. He did well - and was rewarded with a trip to Red Robins for dinner (his choice)

So, here it is...the final photos of the house - clean and ready for the painters to come in. We decided the best option for ease and our budget was to start with a clean palette. So, everything is getting primed and then painted one color - it's sort of a mix between an almond and a taupe. Warm, but light enough to keep things bright. The kitchen cupboards are going to be a light mocha color. (Steve let me pick the colors!). We're just getting the whole house primed and then one coat of color - even on the ceilings. Get things clean and pretty, and then down the road we'll add in a bit of color here and there. I like the clean look though.

Here is the kitchen (we're getting new appliances after the painting is done)Family Room off the kitchen

Carter's room (he was so proud to be in the photos!)
My studio and the spare room (or as Carter calls it - Auntie Nancy's room)
Our room...I forgot to take a pic before we moved the big cabinets out from the wall.
AND....into the painting stages. EVERYTHING was wet, so I got crappy pics. Plus it was pitch black outside and we have no lights inside. These photos were just taken with the flash. This is the end of the primer coat. Paint tomorrow!

Kitchen walls primed
Living room and all the doors primed

Even primed it's a huge improvement in my eyes. Can't wait to see it all done - supposed to be done on Thursday!! Cabinets too!!

Class Photo!

Carter's class photo for Preschool. So cute! (sorry it scanned a bit crooked) I hope none of the other parents in Carter's class mind me posting this. I didn't think there would be too much harm though since my little blog is really just viewed by good family and friends who would see the photo eventually anyways ;)

Late...oops

I just realized that with all my Valentines acitvities posts I never posted a copy of Carter's Valentine! Here it is!

With my sore hand and the house and everything else going on the last few weeks I knew I wasn't going to be able to sit down and make cards with Carter (and he didn't seem to care anyways). His preschool was having a big card swap though, so we needed something. A friend posted a great promotion for 25 free cards online, and I made these up in less than 5 minutes! I haven't had any actually photos printed from this site, but this is the second time I've received a realllllly good (or free!) deal on photo cards from them. Definitely worth checking out the site: SeeHere.com

Bathroom update...

(I have to add this in before I post this entry...this is a bathroom update that merged into a giant pity party...feel free to join me, or stop reading about halfway through!) :P

Okay, it's not much to see in photos...but in real life they are looking great! The top photo is our master bath, and the bottom photo is Carter's bathroom. Both bathrooms have all the tubs and backsplash in, the electrical and plumbing is all working and the walls are up. We stopped in to check it out around 6pm tonight and found Glen still hard at work getting ready to prep the walls for painting tomorrow! Woot!

Once the paint is on, then the lights go in and the new fan for the ceiling (the old ones were too loud), then comes the new floor and finally the new vanity, toilet, and mirror/medicine cabinet.
Slowly but surely...

The painters are coming next Monday and the whole house is getting painted. The kitchen too. Once the paint cures a day or two then the new appliances we got today are being delivered, and we can start the long process of actually moving our stuff in!
I am super excited for our new appliances! We got hooked up with this family owned place in Hayward (hence the Sonic stop...see below!). We were planning on getting all new appliances for the kitchen - fridge, stove, over the range microwave, and dishwasher. We figured our budget was good to cover a nice set, but we were planning on plain white appliances - one for costs, and two for fingerprint issues. We got a pretty decent deal on a 4 piece Frigidaire set in stainless steel though. Cool thing is, Frigidaire puts a non-scratch coating on their stainless...so a) it doesn't scratch, and b) no fingerprints! COOL! I'm sure it'll be a bit more upkeep on the fronts than plain white, but I much prefer the look. Excited!! :)
In other house news this weekend...I got sick. Sick from the new house! :(
I now have documented medical proof that cleaning is bad for me! haha!
I knew I felt off...my mouth felt weird on Friday morning, but I just put it off thinking it was nothing. By dinnertime I could tell under my tongue was swollen, but still didn't think much of it. It was worse by bedtime, and I was definitely trying not to panic, but I decided to sleep on it and see how it was in the morning. I could still breathe fine, but my whole mouth and tongue was swollen. Saturday morning I woke up and it was a hundred times worse! Scary! I could still breathe, so it wasn't emergency room worthy, but I decided to head over to the after hours clinic. (sidenote, I took Carter with me...more on this later)
I've been on a few meds lately, so I wondered it it was an allergic reaction. The doctor thought no, not to the meds. She started to grill me on what I'd eaten and done lately, and the *ding ding* went off as I said I was cleaning at our new house. "Were you around mold, or bleach??" Um...yes...bleach, and a lot of it! I'd been using it with a mask and with the windows open, but in an undiluted form. Apparently it's a pretty common allergy. Sigh...no more bleach for me!
So, we started off treatment with a puff of a steroid inhaler. Nothing. Continued on with a steroid shot. Nothing. Continued that with a shot of prednisone. Nothing. Followed that up with the classic EPI pen. Nope. I was getting stuck several times over...and I hate needles! Of course, my little Carter was was in the room, just playing with my cellphone and pretty oblivious to the whole thing. However, HE got rewarded with a sticker for being good each time they stuck me. Umm...how fair is that??! LOL. Anyways, I think they were pretty close to sending me across the street to the hospital for IV meds when finally I started to show some improvement. It was Sunday morning however before the real puffiness subsided. At any rate, I am supposed to go straight to emergency if this ever happens again...and sadly if it does, I might end up with an EPI pen of my very own one day...all thanks to cleaning.
Sigh! 2010 is not turning out as I'd hope. Here's my little pity party right at the bottom of this post. I'll vent it out into cyber space...
Last year this time (this very week actually) I was feeling terrible. Severe back pain, severe stomach pain and overall I was SICK. Now you see, there is something that you should know about me. If I am very sick, I can suck it up like no one can! I am a champion!! Heck, I was in premature labor, while on vacation for a week with Carter before I ended up in the emergency room. Know what? I was at a wedding a mere 24hrs later (Steve was the best man). When I need to be at the top of my game...I can do it! The flip side is, I freak out about little things. Like getting blood drawn, or a flu shot. I obsess over that stuff like crazy. Big stuff...no problem!
So, back to last year this time. I was in severe pain, but I kept sucking it up. Finally one night Steve took me to the emergency room. You know it's bad when they cart you straight in to your own private ER room and get a CT scan within a hour. I was sick! Truth is, I'd been sick for 6 months. I knew it...I tried to get help in Montreal and was told "it was all in my head". Well, what did I have? A ton of gianarmous gallstones that were traced back to my pregnancy. A problem that could have very simply been solved a year or so in advance with the quick and easy removal of the stones and/or the gallbladder. My gallbladder was so infected however, it caused my pancreas to hop in on the party and I had a severe case of pancreatis. That was so diseased that my entire intestinal system was a wreck...causing me to have an early onset attack of what is called diverticulitis. The dr told me the next morning that I was so badly damaged if I hadn't come in that night I might have died from the toxins in 48hrs. Yikes!
So...I spent two weeks in the hospital fighting the infection before I could actually get the gallbladder removed. To top that off, I was completely IV fed, and couldn't even drink water. You'd think - wow, the upside...weight loss! Nope, I gained 15lbs in water weight. Awesome!
Once I was out of the hospital, I spent more time retraining my digestive system to control the diverticulitis. I am very lucky in that I don't have an official diagnosis of this - it's just the start of what's to come. Therefore, my diet now consists of TONS of water, healthy fiber, and probiotics. If you have this disease, come to me...I know all about it.
To top it all off, my immune system didn't bounce back (as predicted) and I've had every last cold you can imagine since then. I also had a little dose of what my dr thinks was the H1N1 (but I can't complain, because mine really wasn't that bad). 2010 started off with my hadn developing severe tendonitis. Wonderful. Now it remains to be seen, but was pointed out to be likely that the massive doses of Levaquin I've had over the last year caused this..or at least contributed to this. Awesome. I just got over this, and tada...a lovely UTI infection (sorry if that's TMI). Now the bleach allergy. Oh yeah, and I stopped taking the UTI meds in case of allergies to that, so the UTI is back. Double awesome. Of yeah, and the meds for the tendonitis and the meds for the UTI didn't mix, so I had to go off those.
Yeah...I'm going crazy. (and with all these meds, I can't even have a drink! LOL)

Sonic!

Here's a silly little blog post...mostly for my sister! ;)
We Laus love Sonic! I am very sad that there isn't one closer to us in SF. Whenever we drive anywhere remotely close to one, we have to make a pitstop. Steve and Carter are quite fond of the food. I have to say I can take it or leave it. I'm pretty picky as far as my fast food goes. What I do love it their limeades! My past favorite (well, still my favorite overall) HAS to be a Strawberry Limeade. I could seriously drink one of these every day! However, I made the mistake a while back at looking at the nutrition information of one of these babies...and I can hardly bring myself to order a bevvie with that much sugar (41 grams!!) and calories (400!) in it. So, I've traded it in for the Low Cal diet Cherry Limeade. Almost as good, and very refreshing!
We were excited to learn that a location opened up in Hayward recently. Hayward isn't that close to us, but for a treat now and then...maybe! We stopped in today since we were over looking at an appliance outlet store. Since I had my camera I snapped some silly pics!Steve enjoying his lime real fruit slush...Steve making fun of Nancy - who came and ordered a peach iced tea one time. Come ON...over everything else on the menu. For shame! :P
and finally Carter...who really lucked out because instead of milk or orange juice he actually got an orange slush for being a good boy today. Nice surprise with that is he didn't even come close to finishing it. He couldn't stand to wait for it to melt a bit! LOL

Glass blowing with a side of IMHO...

On Saturday the three of us went over the bridge to Berkeley. The daytime excursion consisted of a stop at Ikea for some lamps and other small necessities for the new house.

Of course we also stopped off at Scrapbook Territory for a little shopping therapy! I love that store...and so does Carter. They have DOGS that live in the store. Okay, I don't know if they LIVE there, but they are always there when the store is open. There are several, and Carter just loves to go in. Often he gets to give them a little cuddle, and sometimes even a treat. I think it's cute, because the dogs always seem happy to see Carter too (probably any kids). They love the attention!
The real trip over the bridge was for this event though. A glass blowing demonstration and Pig Roast held annually by a company that Exelixis hires to fix it's damaged glassware. Steve thought it sounded fun so we decided to go check out the free event.

It was very crowded, but yes - interesting. Carter and I watched the glass blowers for a long time. What this one is making is a tiny glass elephant - and his ears are a different color. It was amazing to watch the detail (and Carter liked the fire!)
They also had lots of great food and yes...even a roasted pig. This photo is a good example of why I'm 90% vegetarian...and why I don't ever eat Ham! YUCK! LOL So, onto my IMHO (in my humble opinion) rant. Kids and parents who don't watch them. You know, you'd think in a room full of glassware, fire, and a recently roasted pig - who was still smoking away, people would watch their kids. There were kids running everywhere - mostly of the 8-10year old variety. My goodness, I was worried for them...with a side of great annoyance at their parents for just ditching them. You can see a gaggle of girls in the second photo. They were all pushing and shoving behind the poor glassblower all asking over and over again who was going to get the elephant. Personally, I hope none of them got it (we didn't stay to see!).
Overall though, fun and cool to see!

My Funny Valentines!

How do we celebrate Vday at out house?? Hmmm...not with much! We did make an early morning pit stop to Denny's for breakfast though. Couldn't help snapping a pic of my two sweeties!

Happy Valentine's Day!

Happy Valentine's Day!

This is one of the pieces of artwork Carter did at school to celebrate Feb 14th! The kid loves glitter!

Cards!

Our realtor, Vita, asked me to make her some cards to give out - with a "home" theme of course! My poor hand with it's tendonitis has put quite a cramp on my scrapping style, but nonetheless I managed to get a few different ones made for her. Here's a quick peek!

Future Olympian??

Hmm...doubt it! He's too klutzy...LOL

He was very proud this morning to put on his official Olympic shirt and pose with his stuffed mascots - Quachi and MukMuk. GO CANADA!!!

House Update!

The house is coming along slowly, but surely...our biggest renos are the bathrooms. Things are starting to come together though. The new plumbing is all in, and the tubs are in place. Now goes up the tub walls and then the sheet rock!

Carter took this attractive photo of our contractor Glen...he was still working away at 7pm last night. He just finished putting in all the copper pipes for the tubs! This is the master bath...love how it's looking! I can't wait to take a bath in that tub...it's extra deep!

Loot!

Carter's preschool celebrated Valentines Day this week. They did crafts, made a friendship fruit salad (all the kids brought a piece of fruit for the salad, and they had it for snack), and of course exchanged Valentines. Carter came home with a lot of loot!

Here he is with his Valentine bag... and all his Valentines, and candy too!
